Age-Old Remedies

Age-Old Remedies Using White Tea, Witch Hazel and Rose May Be Beneficial, Study Suggests

ScienceDaily (Dec. 1, 2011) — Age-old remedies could hold the key to treating a wide range of serious medical problems, as well as keeping skin firmer and less wrinkled, according to scientists from London's Kingston University. A collaboration between the university and British beauty brand Neal's Yard Remedies has seen experts discover that white tea, witch hazel and the simple rose hold potential health and beauty properties which could be simply too good to ignore.

The research suggests a number of naturally-occurring substances may offer the hope of new treatments to block the progression of inflammation. It is credited with a major role in both the initiation and development of diseases ranging from cancer, diabetes and arthritis through to neuro-degenerative conditions and cardiovascular and pulmonary problems.

"For thousands of years people used natural remedies to try -- and sometimes succeed -- in curing their ailments and preserving their youth," Professor Declan Naughton, from the University's School of Life Sciences, said. "Now the latest research we have carried out suggests a number of naturally-occurring substances may offer the hope of new treatments to block the progression of inflammation."

Inflammation is credited with a major role in both the initiation and development of diseases ranging from cancer, diabetes and arthritis through to neuro-degenerative conditions and cardiovascular and pulmonary problems. It is also implicated in premature aging and early death. "Inflammation is a secret killer -- helping arrest its development, or being able to stop it happening at all, would clearly be of benefit," Professor Naughton explained.

The new study builds on work undertaken by Professor Naughton and Kingston University PhD student Tamsyn Thring, along with the technical team from Neal's Yard. They tested 21 plant extracts for evidence of their efficiency in fighting cancer and also in the battle against aging. Of the 21 extracts, three -- white tea, witch hazel and rose -- showed considerable potential, with white tea displaying the most marked results. "Indeed it appeared that drinking a simple cup of white tea might well help reduce an individual's risk of cancer, rheumatoid arthritis or even just age-associated wrinkles," Professor Naughton said.

Spurred on by their laboratory findings, the team members decided to take the work further to see if they could replicate the results in human skin cells, looking more closely at the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activity of the three extracts.

Using human skin cells as their model, the researchers added three different concentrations of white tea (freeze dried powder), witch hazel (dried herb) and rose extract (in a medicinal tincture form) to see what effect the mixtures might have on suppressing rogue enzymes and oxidants which play a key role in helping inflammation develop, as well as aging the skin. "As the largest organ in the body, the skin provides a barrier against UV radiation, chemicals, microbes and physical pollutants," Ms Thring said. "Challenges like this can contribute to both inflammation and skin aging.

"We also know that when inflammation starts -- be it a simple cut to a finger or in an arthritic joint -- the body starts producing a compound called interleukin 8, which helps the process along. We began wondering if there was a way we could switch that signal off, thereby blocking the inflammation's progress."

Even though the team's previous research had intimated there might be some promising results ahead, the experts were astonished to see just how good the various concentrations of the three extracts were at doing the job.

This also leads to easy combing while a tangled or roughed-up structure makes the hair look rough and dull.
Diet and lifestyle are two major factors that influence the health of the hair. Poor diet, illness and deficiencies of any particular vitamin and mineral affects the quality of hair and problems like dandruff, thinning hair, balding, premature graying etc. spoil the hair.
Regularly cleaning and brushing the hair is very important. When the hairs are brushed, oil-producing glands in the scalp get stimulated. This natural oil makes the hair glossy and healthy. To give extra shine to the hair, after washing rinse the hair with some lemon juice mixed in a cup of warm water.

Home Remedies for Dandruff

Image of Dandruff
Dandruff is a common scalp condition marked by white flakes on the scalp and itching. It appears to be caused by the yeast-like fungus, malassezia (or pityrosporum). Malassezia is normally found on the scalp, and if it grows unchecked (possibly due to hormone imbalances, stress, immune suppression, infrequent shampooing, illness, or increased oil production), there is mild inflammation that produces dead skin cells. The dead cells mix with oil and clump together, making them appear white and flaky.
Some Home Remedies for Dandruff are:
  • Herbal shampoo
Herbal shampoo wash is advised at least four times a week. For this wash, do use less shampoo and completely rinse it well with water. Apply two tablespoons of vinegar on the scalp, half-an-hour before shampooing; and massage the vinegar lightly into the scalp.
  • Oil
Heat pure til oil or coconut oil. Allow it to  stand for few hrs and then apply either of these oil on your scalp at night. Allow it to stand overnight. Next morning use vinegar as we discussed previously before shampooing.

After 15 minutes to an hour, remove the towel and wash your hair. This is generally done once to twice a week.

Hibiscus Flowers for Hair Care

Image of Hibiscus flowers
Hibiscus (also known as rosemallow or jamaica) has many natural properties which have been valued through out the ages. One of its traditional uses is hair care.
This flower is used for curing dandruff. Hibiscus extracts are used in hair oils, shampoos, hair tonic and conditioners.
Many Ayurvedic hair oil formulations contain hibiscus. The crushed dried flowers are used as a hair dye as each hibiscus flower yields a natural dark purplish dye which may be used to colour premature grey hairs.
The human hair is made up of approximately 85% complex protein called Keratin, the balance consists of water, lipids and melanin pigments with trace minerals like calcium, magnesium, copper, iron. phosphorus, silicone etc. There is nothing as attractive as a thick head of hair which glows with natural health. To maintain this we need good hair care regimen that involves the following:
  • Hair cleansing which involves removal of accumulated sebum, scalp debris and residues of hair grooming preparations. This should ideally be done on alternate days.
  • Hair conditioning which involves making good the natural deficiencies of sebum and repairing the hair cuticle. This makes hair smooth, soft, shining and elastic.
  • Scalp stimulation which involves in providing nutrients and hormonal support to hair by massaging the scalp and nourishing it.
The common problem faced is hair loss which can occur due to one or more of the following reasons:
  • Dandruff
  • Harsh shampoos which have a strong chemical base
  • Pollutants in the air
  • Hair colours, perming and straightening lotions
  • Heredity
  • Physical weakness and lack of proper nutrition
  • Stress
A very simple traditional recipe is to cook some red hibiscus flowers on low fire in coconut or sesame oil and let it cool. This oil is then massaged into the hair. Red Hibiscus or Jabakusum as it is known in Hindi, is known for its hair growth related properties. Care should be taken to rinse the oil out with very mild shampoo otherwise it will nullify the good effect of the oil.
In case some people do not like to oil their hair, the hibiscus flowers can be made into pulp in the mixer and applied to the hair for thirty minutes and then rinsed out with water.
The benefits of Hibiscus treatment:
  • Prevents hair loss
  • Enhances growth of hair
  • Discourages split ends
  • Thickens hair
  • Prevents premature greying of hair

Hair Loss Problem and Natural Tips for Healthy Hair

Balding or receding hairlines, double crown, cowlicks and the unusual pattern of hair growth are the common problems associated with the hair growth. There may be various reasons for these problems. Every day, every one looses some hair. Our body then replaces it with some new strands as part of the many renewal processes that are built into our body systems.
As we all age, 'the reappearance of new hair' event gradually slows down. This observable fact is more evident in men than women, whose 'male-pattern baldness is genetically determined and can begin as early as age 20. For women, hair normally thins after age 50, and considerable hair loss before that age is very rare.
Receding hair lines may occur due to change in the level of hormones, lack of proper diet, growing age, improper health and stress. Cowlick is a hair growth problem that is usually found in the hairline that is situated in the front. This type of hair growth problem is genetic. The hair may open or lift due to the growth of hair follicles in different directions. In case of double crown, there may be a great difficulty in styling the hair. The greatest problem occurs when hair are cut short in an excessive manner, thus sticking up.
The common problem faced is hair loss which can occur due to one or more of the following reasons:
  • Dandruff
  • Harsh shampoos which have a strong chemical base
  • Pollutants in the air
  • Hair colours, perming and straightening lotions
  • Heredity
  • Physical weakness and lack of proper nutrition
  • Stress
